Miss Northwestern Ohio 2013!

This past weekend I was crowned Miss Northwestern Ohio 2013! All my hard work finally paid off!  I am so excited and now will be competing for Miss Ohio 2013!  I also won the interview award at the pageant!  I received $1,750 in scholarship money from this pageant, and this year from competing I have received over $3,000.

Live Healthy America-Food Is Elementary Week 8!

This past week I had the opportunity to teach my class about bulgur wheat!  Bulgur wheat are whole wheat seeds that have been cut and pre-steamed so that they do not have to be cooked- they only need to be hydrated by adding hot water.  As a class, we divided into three different stations.  At one station, students learned to measure using measuring cups and measuring spoons.  At the other two stations we made two different recipes.  One was tabouli and the other was egyptian bulgur salad.  I know many people are familiar with tabouli and that egyptian bulgur salad sounds weird, but both recipes are so delicious! (and healthy!) The students had such a great time getting to cut up all the ingredients for the recipes and it took them a while since there were so many!  It is so great to see the students have a smile on their face and have fun.  As a class, we tried both recipes and so many of them said it was their new favorite meal!  I was pleasantly surprised and the students said they are taking their recipe cards home to their mom or dad so they can make it too!  It felt great knowing that little by little these children are becoming healthier since they have new recipes to take home and they truly understand the importance of physical activity.

After the class, a student came up to me and told me about his situation at home.  I actually started to tear up because while I know that there are issues like the one he told me in Athens county, I would never want to believe one of my precious students would have to deal with something like that.  As heartbroken as I was, I let him take home the leftovers from our class meal and he assured me he would share it with his sister for dinner so they wouldn't be hungry.  Still thinking about it now, I want to cry.  I ask anyone that is reading my blog to pray for not just him, but all children in the world, especially in Athens County.  It is so great that my students and I have all been able to establish such great relationships and that they feel they can come to me whenever they need.  It is such a good feeling knowing you are making a huge difference in so many childrens lives.  I hope I can expand my work to the entire state of Ohio as Miss Ohio some day and even America as Miss America :)

Below I have scanned in the egyptian bulgur salad recipe!  I hope everyone is able to enjoy this!

On a side note: Last weekend I competed in the Miss Maple City pageant.  I placed 3rd runner up there.  I have now competed in 5 pageants this season! Crazy!

To sum up my competitions I...
placed 2nd runner up at Miss North Coast along with wining the swimsuit award there.
placed 1st runner up at Miss Clayland along with winning the interview award and community service award.
placed 2nd runner up at Miss Maumee Valley.
placed 3rd runner up at Miss Maple City.

I will be competing for the title of Miss Northwestern Ohio this weekend in Defiance, Ohio!  I am hoping that I will be able to secure the crown, as this will be my 6th pageant of the season!  I know the directors of this pageant are really amazing people and have a dance studio which would be perfect for me for preparation of Miss Ohio!
